Haze in Malaysia: Why Is Your Solar PV Output Lower Than Usual?

Malaysia is experiencing hazy conditions again, with poor air quality affecting parts of Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and other areas.

Your solar generation may be lower than usual.

But does that mean your solar system has a problem?

Not necessarily.

Can Haze Affect Solar Panel Performance?

Yes.

Solar panels generate electricity from sunlight. During hazy weather, airborne particles can reduce the amount of sunlight reaching the panels.

This means your Solar PV system may temporarily generate less electricity, even when the system itself is operating normally.

Research conducted in Malaysia has also shown that significant haze conditions can reduce PV power generation.

During and after hazy weather, keep an eye on your solar monitoring system.

You may want to check if:

• Solar generation is much lower than usual
• Output remains low even after clearer weather returns
• Your inverter shows an error or warning
• Solar panels appear dusty or dirty
• Your Solar PV system has not been checked for a long time

A temporary reduction during haze does not automatically mean something is faulty.

However, if performance stays unusually low afterwards, it may be worth getting the system checked.
